I am a proud Overseas Filipino Worker for more than three years now and I want to be honest that I messed up in my first few years. First, I went here with a broad or even without a vision. A vision of just having a salary and help my family. I did not include creating a road map. I have it in my mind but it’s very cloudy. But right now, since I am still here and will still have the chance to correct my mistakes, I want to share new gem of knowledge that I discovered working here. If only someone told me these few years ago, I should have done it better. But it’s alright since I learned my lessons. So today, let’s all follow this simple road map of a successful overseas Filipino Worker.
1. Excitement Is Your Last Name
Yes! Remember the time when you are holding your passport with a stamp of your working visa? You were tickled pink. There were tears in your eyes out of joy. Finally, your dream of going abroad and earning huge amount of money to build your dreams has commenced.
2. Day One in Your Workplace
You were a little bit anxious but you composed yourself and did some small talk, “Hey myself! We can do this!” And when you were given a task, it was flawlessly done. It seems like you are the best employee in town. You don’t even want to sit. You just want to work.
3. First Payment
And so the most exciting part of the month came. You received your first salary. You can’t remove the smiles on your face because finally you had the taste of earning five times from you earn back in the Philippines. But you have to throw it all away. Remember when you went abroad, you borrowed a lot of money. So you need to pay the money you used for your placement fee, allowance, etc.
And then after few months, you commit that you will save majority of your salary. You just spent what you needed. You tried to behave during massive sales in the malls. And you again talk to you self, “Dear myself, working as an OFW is just a privilege. Tomorrow, I can be retrenched. I will not be here forever so let us prioritize what we need”. And then you focus on saving, since you are aware that nothing is permanent in this world. Not even your job.
And then you search for some investment. You believed that it is better to start creating businesses while you are overseas so that when it’ll become stable and can sustain your expenses, then maybe you can go home immediately. Furthermore, you only invested on the things that you know and understand. You never invested in any alien type of businesses.
And then when you earn something from your businesses and from your salary, you reinvest again. You believe that the real power over financial freedom is living the basic principle of money which is “Save, invest and reinvest”. And then you were surprised that what you earned from your businesses can already sustain your expenses for you and your family.
7. Going Home
“I’m going home. To A place where I belong. And when your love has always been enough for me” You were playing this song in the airplane. And because you are already having a passive income, what’s the sense of living a life away from your loved ones. Finally, you created that resignation letter as a symbol that you will be living with your family once again. You can already kiss and hug them. You bid farewell to the country where you worked and offered your overflowing gratitude.
8. Be with family
And then you became a full time dad or mom. You were able to cook food for your children. And whenever they need you in the school, you were always present. Apart from being financially free because you made an intelligent investments stint, you are also free from employment. You work full time as a mother or father. Believe me, it’s everyone’s dream.
9. Following your passion
When you had enough money, you realized that you love to travel. And then you schedule your first international trip with your families. It was amazing. And then in few months, you realized you love to bake. And then you enrolled to a baking class and had fun. Finally you turned it into a business. Earning money while doing what you love. What an amazing experience.
10. Success Stories
And since you are a successful OFWs, many OFWs are asking for your expertise on how to help them live the kind of life that you have. Finally, you decided to offer free service by mentoring and coaching the people who are very near to your heart, your fellow Overseas Filipino Workers. One by one, you continue your mission of producing truly rich Overseas Filipino Workers.
You created a tag line as “One OFW at a time”
Isn’t it amazing to have this kind of life?
I believe that it can become a reality only if you decide to do it. Yes! We have a control over our future.
It is your choice. It is not by chance, by luck or by alignment of the stars. I strongly believe that it is our conscious effort to make a difference in our lives.
